The May list

May, arguably the nerdiest month of the calendar, is upon us. And with plenty to do, see, and celebrate, it’s easy to see why. Check out our May list to see what should be on your agenda this month.

Watch: Hokum

2026 is proving to be a strong year for horror movies and May is set to continue this trend with the release of Hokum. It follows an author who travels an inn to spread his parents ashes unaware that the property is said to be haunted by a witch. Severance star Adam Scott takes the lead role so audiences can be reassured that the acting will be strong. Building the perfect amount of tension with eerie vibes, jump scares, and supernatural elements, the trailer is sure to get horror fans excited. Hokum is released globally in cinemas today/May 1st.

Read: Take Me To Your Leader by Neil deGrasse Tyson

America’s most well known astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson is coming out with a novel that should be on any nerd’s book list. A great balance of comedy and science, this book will be a practical guide for dealing with extraterrestrial visitors, an exploration of how it may happen, and a cultural history of society’s fascination with aliens. Fun and informative, we predict this will be an easy read that fans won’t want to put down. Take Me To Your Leader will be released on May 12th in the US and May 14th in the UK.

Play: 007 First Light

Audiences have been sat patiently waiting for another instalment in the James Bond film franchise for a long time. While a movie is not on the horizon yet, fans can get their fix with the upcoming Bond game, 007 First Light. The game will be an origin story, following the spy as he embarks on a mission to earn his license to kill. Promising action and adventure, gameplay will be centred around spycraft, gadgets and combat, the perfect combination for Bond fans. 007 First Light will be released on PlayStation 5, Windows and Xbox on May 27th with a Nintendo Switch 2 version scheduled for later this year.

See: Beetlejuice the Musical

Say his name 3 times and he’ll appear…in London? That’s right, after a Broadway run which was disrupted by Covid, Beetlejuice the musical is finally coming to the West End. The cast is filled with theatre royalty including David Hunter (Waitress), Aimie Atkinson (Six), and David Fynn (School of Rock) in the titular role. The cult classic is made for stage, and we foresee catchy songs, fantastic costumes, and chaotic fun. Go see the ghost with the most at the Prince Edward Theatre from the 20th May.

Listen: Maitreya Corso by Maya Hawke

If like us you’re missing Stranger Things since it ended back in January, then we have the solution. Maya Hawke, who played fan favourite Robin, is releasing her fourth album, entitled Maitreya Corso, this month. From synth-driven tracks to folksy lullabies, the album has something for everything and displays Hawke’s superb songwriting skills. Maitreya Corso is out today/May 1st.

Experience: Eta Aquariids meteor shower

Don’t forget to look up this month as you’ll be treated to an incredible scene in the night sky. The Eta Aquariids are a meteor shower associated with Halley’s Comet. Peaking on May 6th, the Eta Aquariids are the third strongest annual meteor shower observable at Earth. Promising spectacular “shooting stars”, we recommend wrapping up warm and getting comfortable so you can make most of this celestial phenomenon.

Celebrate: Star Wars Day

Probably the most famous geeky holiday, May the 4th, or Star Wars Day, is almost upon us. There will be plenty to celebrate this year with the franchise releasing new films and television episodes, merch discounts across the galaxy internet, and Disney holding special events in their parks. Watch this space as we will be doing our annual Star Wars Day article giving fans suggestions on how to commemorate the special day.

Stream: Spider-Noir

There’s lots of good television coming in May but at the top of our list is Spider-Noir. The latest adaptation of the webslinger follows Ben, a down on his luck private investigator who must return to being Spider-Man after stepping away years earlier after tragedy struck. Nicholas Cage as Spider-Man was not on our bingo card but we are here for it. With him and co-star Lamorne Morris, you know there will be a good balance of comedy amongst the gritty action. The series is being released in both black-and-white and color versions to really play on the 1930s noir vibes and the visuals look stunning. Spider-Noir will be released on May 25th in the US on MGM+, and on May 27th globally on Amazon Prime.
