The world is changing, and with every year that passes we lose a little more of the things we grew up with. It now looks increasingly likely that physical media could become a thing of the past over the coming years, especially as Sony currently intends to phase it out. I’m far from a Luddite, and I appreciate the convenience of digital media, but the more we lose, the more pieces of our shared culture—and even ourselves—we risk leaving behind.
In my latest video, I explore why physical media matters from a psychological perspective, arguing that its decline could affect our friendships, relationships, and even our sense of identity. I’m not suggesting we should abandon digital media—in fact, I believe physical and digital can happily coexist. Instead, I look at how we might preserve the best of both worlds by taking inspiration from an unexpected place: South Korea, where physical media continues to thrive.
