One of the earliest reviews I ever made for this site was Luchador! Mexican Wrestling Dice game, a game that to this day I still regularly play. I have always had a soft spot for Backspindle and it’s not because they are local to me, but its because they create unique and visually stunning games, ones that practically anyone can pick up and play. Just speaking with the guys behind their latest project helped show the level of detail that goes into their work, from gorgeous figures to a very intuitive rule system their games are as much fun as they are works of art.
Their latest game is no exception with a theme inspired by Irish folklore and mythology and a style that reminds me of Terrry Pratchett and Laika. In the game players assume the roles of their heroes and must journey in the Mourne Mountains to work together to defeat the evil Shimnavore before it is too late. On their quest they’ll encounter many enemies, including infuriating Bogbeans and terrifying Nightmares like the Banshee, the Changeling and the Dullahan. To triumph, heroes must gather charms, equipment and magical relics, to increase their powers and use their skills and combat abilities effectively. MourneQuest is a cooperative board game for 1 to 4 players, which is just great because I love games that force us to work together rather than against each other, not only that but every player is vital to the games progress. With an average playing time 60-90 minutes it is very accessible.
If you like the look of this game and want to back it then check out their Kickstarter here.
