I remember one Saturday afternoon on Channel 5, watching a made-for-TV version of The Odyssey, and I was hooked. Here was the original Greek antihero, Odysseus, a mortal standing against gods and monsters, defying impossible odds just to make it home to Penelope.
And when I found out that Nolan was making this movie well I wasn’t hooked, I was drawn into the maw of Scylla herself.
If you’re somehow unfamiliar, The Odyssey is the sequel to the story of Troy—a tale that follows one man’s decades-long struggle to return home to the woman he loves.
It has everything: gods, monsters, sorceresses, romance, and an epic cast of characters.
This new take reportedly stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, with Anne Hathaway as his wife, Penelope. The ensemble cast includes Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron, alongside a stacked supporting lineup featuring Elliot Page, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, Jesse Garcia, Rafi Gavron, Shiloh Fernandez, Corey Hawkins, Nick E. Tarabay, Maurice Compte, Michael Vlamis, Iddo Goldberg, Josh Stewart, Ryan Hurst, Anthony Molinari, Jovan Adepo, Logan Marshall-Green, James Remar, Travis Scott, Sean Avery, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Will Yun Lee, and Mia Goth.
The film has already faced criticism for not being entirely accurate, but honestly? That feels like missing the point.
Nolan isn’t here to give us a history lesson. He’s here to tell a myth.
And everything I’ve seen so far has me wanting more.
This doesn’t need to be accurate—because Nolan isn’t chasing accuracy.
He’s chasing something closer to perfection.
