Fairy Quest Volume 2 (2015) Comic Book Review

fairy-quest

We all grew up with fairy tales and in recent years the re-imagining of such tales has become big business, so much so that I know a lot of you are rolling your eyes at the thought of this article. But I implore you be patient and hear me out. First off if you’re a fan of the twisted fairy tale this is for you so stop reading and go purchase it. However if you’re maybe a more traditional comic book fan and would like to read work written by industry legend Paul Jenkins (Sentry, Deathmatch) as well as drawn by comics superstar Humberto Ramos (Amazing Spider-Man) then this is for you. Fairy Quest is the kickstarter success story that many of us have heard of, once again if not then go get yourself a copy. Volume two follows the adventures of Red and Mister Woof . Picking up from where volume one left us their journey has only just begun. A story about friendship with Red and Woof finding themselves at odds with the awful Mister Grimm and his cadre of think police, it has a great Orwellian feel to it. They must enter the Dark forest, but are they ready for what lies within?

The art work is the biggest draw for me, though I do love the story as it’s brilliant but I will talk more about that later. Some how they have created art that is both bright and dark, cute but disturbing. It’s a great oxymoron and a wonderful blend. This is usually not my kind of story but I love it, I truly love what they have created. The art work just sucks you in and its what attracted me to read this book in the first place. Just one look at this art and you will agree with me.

As for the plot they have taken an idea that is beginning to become a little tired and old but they have rejuvenated it, by giving it that 1984 feel I mentioned earlier. They have opened this idea up to a whole new audience and made a truly unique series.

This is what Boom! Studios have to say about the series:

What’s to Love: We all grew up reading fairy tales. We all love fairy tales! But if you enjoy your fairy tales with a twist like Fables, Fairest, or Once Upon a Time, Fairy Quest is the perfect series for you. Plus, Paul Jenkins (Wolverine: Origin) and Humberto Ramos (Amazing Spider-Man) have already made the fans their co-publishers with a successful Kickstarter.
