I am a nerd and I like shows like Firefly, Stargate (and its spin offs), Farscape and even Andromeda .Don’t get me wrong I like other shows too but I mention these four because after watching the first episode of Dark Matter I think I found a series that takes elements of these shows and then does its own thing giving you some great science fiction with a great mystery added in to the mix.
Dark Matter is a very unique series in that it has taken an idea that many science fiction shows have used in the past which is the amnesia episode (check out Beneath the Surface). With Dark Matter they have made an entire series out of it, or at least the beginning of a series. This is something I really like the idea of as waking up and not knowing who you are is pretty shit but at the same time it’s a fresh start. In Dark Matter we have a group of people who could be awfully terrible people but are waking up with renewed innocence, at least that’s what I’m hoping. It gives the series a whole different sort of conflict and an internally driven one, the fight with oneself.
Beyond this another draw for me is the sets, the key thing to making any show set on a space ship is a great set. I mean think Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly or even Cowboy Bebop as the ship itself is a character. Maybe not in the sense of Andromeda, where the physical ship was a character but these ships had their own charm and helped set the tone of the series. Though I feel it’s worth mentioning that a good set also means that you can create a great bottle episode. Though great sets and great props are necessary for a show like this a few good special effects can’t hurt either and from what I’ve seen so far the series has that too.
But what makes this series truly great is the cast and as usual in space only the attractive seem to survive.
Marc Bendavid as One.
Melissa O’Neil as Two.
Anthony Lemke as Three.
Alex Mallari Jr. as Four.
Jodelle Ferland as Five.
Roger Cross as Six.
and Zoie Palmer as The Android.
I’m not really familiar with most of the actors but they seem to be a good mix and Melissa O’Neil’s character Two seems to be on her way to the role of leader. It’s a nice change to see an asian female in a lead role as those types of roles are few and far between.
I think Syfy really have a great show here and I hope they don’t drop the ball on this one, so keep up the good work guys.
