RIP Hayden Panettiere

I’m writing this one with a heavy heart.

RIP to the wonderful Hayden Panettiere.

Hayden Panettiere had quite the Hollywood career, appearing on screen from just 11 months old. Her full-time acting career began in 1994 when she played Sarah Roberts in the ABC soap opera One Life to Live, before going on to play Lizzie Spaulding in Guiding Light.

Her role as Princess Dot in Pixar’s A Bug’s Life introduced her to another generation of viewers, while films including Remember the Titans, Scream and I Love You, Beth Cooper demonstrated just how versatile she could be.

Of course, for many of us, Hayden will forever be Claire Bennet in Heroes — the cheerleader who needed saving.

“Save the cheerleader, save the world.”

Earlier this year, Hayden released her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, in which she spoke candidly about what growing up in the entertainment industry had cost her:

“From a very young age, I lost the chance to have a normal childhood, friends, relationships, and my privacy.”

Hayden was open about some of the incredibly difficult periods of her life. But today, I don’t want to dwell on those.

She deserves better than to have her life reduced to her struggles.

Instead, we should remember the performer who entertained millions of people, the little girl who grew up in front of our eyes, and the woman whose work became part of so many people’s childhoods and lives.

Across the internet today, tributes are coming from colleagues, friends and fans. Again and again, people are remembering not simply the actress they watched on screen, but the person they encountered behind it — her talent, her resilience and the light she brought into people’s lives.

Thirty-six is far, far too young.

Rest easy, Hayden.

Hayden, ní imithe uainn, ach imithe romhainn.

Not gone from us, but gone before us.
