My Top 10 DC Animated Movies

For a long time there was a long running joke that the DC animation department should be in charge of making the films, because the quality and consistency of their work was always so high. They constantly put out films and honestly none of them are terrible, in fact a good majority are excellent and it’s with that fact that I have decided to put together a list of my top 10 DC Animated Films. Before you read this I will admit this may not necessarily be the best, but these are my favourite ten and it is just an opinion, if you disagree go find the post on our facebook page and tell me why you think I am wrong.

10.Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths

I had to start with Crisis on Two Earths, because though its one of my favourites its far from perfect. Probably due to it originally being the bridge between Justice league and Justice League Unlimited, until that plan was scrapped. Saying that, James Wood was just haunting as Owlman and for that reason alone you should watch this film.

9.Batman: Gotham Knight

Gotham Knight is a strange film, in the fact that it’s a bunch of shorts which are all set in the Nolan universe, where we see Batman take on Killer Croc, Sal Marone and Deadshot all after the events of Batman Begins. These films fall short sowly because they step away from the realism of Nolans movies but its interesting to see Gotham beginning to adjust to a life with Batman.

8.Justice League: Gods and Monsters

The ultimate what if scenario, what of Zod’s son reached earth? What if Manbat became a vigilante? And what if one of the New Gods became a superhero, instead of Wonder Women? Here we have a much more effective and brutal Justice League, who though far from evil still work in a grey area.

7.Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox

If you could go back and fix your biggest mistake would you do it? Even if it meant loosing everything you have? Thats the questions this film chooses to ask. A truly dark look at what could happen in a world where the League looses its moral compasses.

6.Superman/Batman: Apocalypse

Dont judge me but this film is pretty much here because I love Supergirl and was glad to see front and center. Besides Supergirl Batman has some great lines and even manages to stare down one of the biggest bad’s in the DC universe.

5.Green Lantern: Emerald Knights

A collection of short stories highlighting the exploits of the Green Lantern corps. I put this one so high on my list because I feel the corp’s is underappreciated and these stories have such range, they can you make you laugh and make you cry, really worth the watch.

4.Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker

Another underappreciated character is that of Terry McGuiness, if you dont believe me then this film is the one to change your mind. The story see’s the latest Batman go up against the original Joker, this one was the first time I realized cartoons can get Dark, utterly love this movie and have seen it way to many times to count.

3.Wonder Woman

I know everyone says that Gal Gadot’s turn as Wonder Women was the definitive Wonder Women Origin Story but honestly this animated feature is a strong competitor, its a little cheesy but God its fun, plus it has Nathon Fillion. What else do you need from a movie?

2.Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

Part of me think’s this should be number 1, in my opinion it is the best Batman film out there. I wont even say anything about it, you the fan’s will just need to go see it for yourselves, because its just that good. (Though try not to cry at the grave yard scene)

1.Batman: Under the Red Hood

I know I said Mask of the Phantasm is the greatest Batman film ever ( and it is) but I just prefer this one, besides this is a more a Bat-Family film. All I will say is the speech at the end, god that speech always gets me, you know the one that goes like this:

“Is that what you think this is about?! That you let me die? I don’t know what clouded your judgment worse. Your guilt or your antiquated sense of morality. Bruce, I forgive you… For not saving me. But why, why on God’s earth is HE still alive?!  Why? I’m not talking about killing Penguin, or Scarecrow, or Dent. I’m talking about HIM. Just him. I’m doing it because… because he took me away from you.”
Gorgeous animation, a great voice cast, high stakes and some very dark moments this is DC Animation at its finest and if you don’t in fact shed a single tear then you may infact be dead inside.
