It has been far to long since we last left The Shield, but Andy Luke is back with special guest Ian Lawther to once again talk about Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis) and his oh so crooked Strike Team. Where Part 1 of the Podcast dealt with seasons 1 to 3 this release will deal with seasons 4 and 5.
If you are not familiar with the show: The Shield was loosely based on the real life Rampart Division police scandal. And deals with cops that do not operate in the most ethical ways. The show ran from early 2002 right through till the end of 2008. It even had its own Comic book, tie in video game and online short, both of which bridge the gap between different seasons. This truly was a progressive show in how it was released.
I was surprised to learn that Glenn Close came into season 4 of The Shield. She plays new Captain, Monica Rawling. Rawling has a strong moral compass and hands-on management style, you have to assume that this is not going to mesh well with the team we have been following so far.
And as much as I am a fan of Glenn Close I was very pleased to see that Forest Whitaker also eventually joins the cast. Forest is an actor that just makes everything better and in The Shield he plays Jon Kavanaugh, a determined and resolute investigator who wants to advance his career by building a case against the Strike Team.
Both of these acclaimed Actors performances where met with great acclaim with Glenn Close being nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series and in the Golden Globes, nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama. In the Satellite Awards, Forest Whitaker was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television. So if you needed an extra reason to watch The Shield there are two.
There is going to be a lot of Spoilers this time round so if you are not caught up there may be issues. And on top of all of this Seasons 4 and 5 delve into much darker territory than the previous ones, so you have been warned.
