What can we expect at San Diego Comic-Con 2016?

San Diego Comic-Con International 2016 may still be 9 months away but it’s never too early to start planning for the next Comic-Con. In fact some people, who where quick on their feet, have already secured their hotel accommodation for next year before they even have their tickets secured.

When will San Diego Comic-Con International 2016 take place?

Wednesday 20th July (preview night) to Sunday 24th July, 2016.

What can we expect to screen on preview night?

It’s too early to predict what shows could be screening on preview night however one option could be:

This is an upcoming American thriller television series created by Robert King and Michelle King. CBS announced a 13-episode straight-to-series order on July 22, 2015. The show is expected to premiere in Summer 2016.

Is there any San Diego Downtown hotels I can book now for Comic-Con 2016?

At the moment there isn’t any nearby hotels, to the San Diego Convention Center, that you can book unless you are willing to pay extortionate prices. So for those who didn’t manage to book their hotel early, they will have to wait for the hotel lottery next year. You can check out our article about our pick of top Comic-Con hotels here.

When will tickets for San Diego Comic-Con International 2016 go on sale?

Comic-Con 2016 Attendee Preregistration will open sometime after October 31, 2015. Only those that purchased a Comic-Con 2015 attendee badge AND validated their 2015 Badge Number before September 15, 2015 are eligible to participate in 2016 Attendee Preregistration. To see if you are eligible, simply log in to your Comic-Con Member ID account and select the “Registration Info” tab.

First time attendees, professionals, guest of professionals, trade professionals, exhibitors (and exhibitor-purchased attendee badges), volunteers, staff, complimentary passes, and press will not be eligible to participate in 2016 Attendee Preregistration. Online registration for these categories will occur at a later date which will be sometime early next year, February or March 2016 would be my best guess.

If you haven’t already done so, make you create a Member ID account online on San Diego Comic-Con International’s official website as you will be unable to purchase tickets without one.

Warning: If you select to opt-out of email communications from Comic-Con (when applying for a Member ID), you will not receive important registration information or badge sales notifications.

What movies can we expect at San Diego Comic-Con International 2016?

Nothing has been confirmed yet since Comic-Con 2016 is still 9 months away, however there are quiet a few films we expect to be there including: Doctor Strange, Star Wars: Rogue One, Suicide Squad, Gambit, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and many more. Suicide Squad will be released in USA on 5th August, 2016 which means I wouldn’t be surprised if they had a premiere for the film at San Diego Comic-Con International 2016. I suppose that’s just wishful thinking for an early screening so I guess exclusive footage being shown is more likely.

Bruce Timm expects to show his animated feature of The Killing Joke at Comic-Con 2016. I’m guessing this could be a premiere screening probably at the Reading Gaslamp cinema. The Killing Joke has been given the green light by the studio to be able to have an ‘R’ rating (15/18 UK certificate). I’m looking forward to seeing this film especially since the creative team behind it won’t be restricted by censorship and the fact that Mark Hamill will be back to voice the Joker.

Update 3/6/16: The world premiere has been confirmed to take place on Friday 22nd July 2016, although a venue for the premiere has yet to be announced.

The premiere will spotlight the first public exhibition of the eagerly awaited film and a post-screening panel discussion among available members of the core cast and filmmaking team. The celebrity-laden cast is led by Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series, Justice League) and Mark Hamill (Batman: The Animated Series,Star Wars franchise) as they reprise their seminal roles as the voices of Batman/Bruce Wayne and The Joker, respectively, as well as Tara Strong (Teen Titans; Batman: Arkham games) as Barbara Gordon and Ray Wise (Twin Peaks, RoboCop) as Commissioner Gordon. Batman: The Killing Joke is directed by Sam Liu (Justice League vs. Teen Titans) from a script by Eisner Award-winning writer Brian Azzarello. Bruce Timm and Sam Register are executive producers. Benjamin Melniker & Michael Uslan are executive producers. Alan Burnett is co-producer.

Personally I’m hoping King Kong: Skull Island will have a panel at Comic-Con 2016 to promote its upcoming release in 2017. It’d be great to see Tom Hiddleston on the stage again, who can forget that epic entrance he made as Loki at Comic-Con 2013.

What parties can expect at Comic-Con 2016?

If the Playboy party is back next year, I wouldn’t be surprised if A&E networks sponsors it again but this time with their new show Damien.

The network previously sponsored the Bates Motel Playboy party at Comic-Con 2013.

WIRED Cafe could also be back at Comic-Con 2016, it could end up being another one day only event like it was at Comic-Con 2015. However if they manage to secure a big sponsor then things could change and it could be back to a 3 day event like it used to be.

MTV could also possibly be back for Comic-Con 2016 with MTV Fandom Awards and Fan fest.

What outside events can we expect at Comic-Con 2016?

Conan O’Brien will be back for live tapings at the Spreckels Theatre from Wednesday 20th July to Saturday 23rd July, 2016. Details about how to obtain tickets for the show will be available closer to the time. I’m guessing they will most likely have standby tickets available like they did for the live tapings at Comic-Con 2015. Check out their official website for links to their tapings at Comic-Con 2015.

Here’s hoping Nerd HQ will be back at Comic-Con 2016, it just wouldn’t be the time same without it as I’ve never attended a Comic-Con when it wasn’t there.

Nerd HQ

I also expect the Assassin’s Creed experience to be back and this time I suspect they will pull out all the stops especially with the Assassin’s Creed movie out later in the year in December, 2016.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed Michael Fassbender will have a panel at Comic-Con 2016 and make an appearance at the Assassin’s Creed experience. If it does come back for another year, which is highly likely, then I wouldn’t be surprised if Michael Fassbender turns up to complete the free running course himself.

What special events can we expect at Comic-Con 2016?

2016 with be the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek, I expect William Shatner, George Takei and their other Star Trek cast and crew to be at Comic-Con with something special in mind to celebrate with their fans.

Even though Comic-Con 2016 is still 9 months away, I can’t wait as it’s already got the potential to be one of the best Comic-Cons to date.
