San Diego Comic Con 2014: The Best of the Best

Now that the SDCC euphoria has died down a little bit I thought it was a good time to discuss what we at Nerdgeist loved about Comic Con. Our own personal Comic Con awards list if you’d like. Now while I could’ve listed 100 things and I’m sure there are some amazing things I missed, I’ve limited the list to a top 11. So here are our favourite things about SDCC 2014.

Best Swag Bag: Star Wars Rebels Party

Kicking off Comic Con, the Star Wars: Rebels party (co hosted by HitFix) impressed with its exclusive trailers, character photo booths and open bar.

However perhaps most impressive was its swag bag. Filled with exclusive Star Wars goodies, it was enough to make any fan squeal. My personal highlight was the Stormtrooper hat- geeky but oh so cool!

Best place to chill out: Wired Cafe

Comic Con can be stressful, sometimes you just need a place to escape the crowds and relax. And where was the best place to do that? Hands down, Wired Cafe. Set up on a terrace in the Omni guests could drink, eat and mingle all while catching some rays. Ben and Jerry’s provided ice cream in the hot weather while a Game of Thrones themed bar served White Walker cocktails and the new GoT Ommegang beer.  Guests also got to take part in the Ascend the Wall Oculus Rift experience. Numerous celebs hung out at Wired including Will Poulter, Nathan Fillion and the cast of Teen Wolf.

Most insightful interview- Manu Bennett

Nerdgeist interviewed a lot of people at Comic Con but no one was more insightful than Manu Bennett. When talking to him I got the sense that he truly understood his Arrow character on a deeper level. At times he paused before answering; you could tell he really wanted to reply to the question in the best possible way. As a result his answers were both intelligent and interesting. His love and passion for his character really shone through and he was a real pleasure to interview. The interview hasn’t been uploaded yet due to some technical issues but watch this space for when it does.

Best themed place to eat- Ascension Cafe (Syfy)

Every year Syfy take over Hard Rock Hotel’s cafe and add their own unique twist to it. Syfy picks one of their shows and redecorates the cafe to fit in with the theme of that show. This year they picked space themed show Ascension. Everything little thing was themed; the tables, the bar, the chairs, the walls. But perhaps what was most impressive was the outside of the cafe that featured numerous statues of people, the detail was astounding. An added bonus- this cafe does the best orange juice I have ever tasted. Seriously.

Best Pilot- Scorpion

I feel like I don’t need to say much about Scorpion. I geeked out over it in my promos review and then completely gushed about it in my pilot review. However I do feel like it needs to be recognised on this list. I saw a lot of pilots at Comic Con but none beat out Scorpion. The audience seemed to agree and the excitement in the room was electrifying. But don’t take my word for it, go watch it. Scorpion airs on CBS at 9pm ET on September 22nd.

Biggest sense of fan community- MTV U Fandom Awards and Fan Fest

With Linkin Park performing and stars like Channing Tatum and Natalie Dormer attending, the MTV U Fandown Awards and Fan Fest was always going to be a success. But what made the event so awesome was the community and excitement shared by the fans. The cheers were deafening for both the nominations and winners and you could tell that both the fans and stars were genuinely happy to be there. The fairground and amazing food stalls just added to the great atmosphere.created by this event. A good time had by all.

Best place to party- Bates Motel event by Playboy

Friday saw Playboy and A&E take over a parking lot to host a party celebrating Bates Motel. Think grunge meets glamour. Lots of stars flocked down the red carpet including Orlando Bloom, Stephen Amell and George R.R. Martin. We even managed to get interviews with some of them which you can view here. Additionally guests attempted to start the engine of a Triumph motorcycle on display in order to win a donation to the charity of their choice. Star of Bates Motel, Vera Farmiga was among the winners. There was a definite party atmosphere as the stars let their hair down. The drinking and dancing went on well into the early hours and everybody left looking very happy.

Coolest celeb to party with- Zack Ward

As I mentioned earlier I attended the Star Wars Rebel Party and as cool as the swag bags and exclusive trailers were, nothing topped meeting Zack Ward. Zack has been in too many projects to list here but highlights include Transformers, Dollhouse and Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles. So naturally I was a fan. I’m sure everyone that has met him will agree with me when I say he is the nicest, most down to earth person ever. The guy has so much time for his fans. He chatted with our group for over 2 hours and we all did shots together.

Best offsite activity- Gotham zip line

There were many exciting offsite activities on offer but none quite as impressive as the Gotham zip line. Set against a backdrop of Gotham city, fans got to zip line the area between the convention centre and the Hilton Bayfront Hotel, all while taking in great views of the waterfront. Afterwards they got a commemorative photo and an exclusive Gotham city police badge and t-shirt. Commissioner Gordon himself, Ben McKenzie, even tried it out.

Best offsite event- Nerd HQ

Returning for its 4th year, Nerd HQ took over a section of Petco Park stadium to host 4 days of panels, photo sessions, gaming and parties. Zachary Levi leads this extraordinary event which this year included panels featuring Nathan Fillion, Evangeline Lily and Yvonne Strahovski. An injured Joss Whedon even appeared via video chat. But let’s not forget the biggest reason why Nerd HQ is so cool, it’s all for charity. While everybody involved has lots of fun, it also benefits those in need. The proceeds go to Operation Smile, a charity providing cleft lip and palate repair surgeries to children. A truly great cause.

Most geek worthy panel- Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Agent Carter

I may be slightly biased on this one. This was the panel I was most looking forward to and the only panel that I queued overnight for. However it was so much more than I hoped for. A lot of people staked out Ballroom 20 all day just to see this panel. You could feel the sense of anticipation from the crowd and when the panellists from these shows walked on stage the whole room erupted with cheers. For the 45 minutes that this panel was on the excitement and enthusiasm didn’t lower for one second. Highlights included receiving an exclusive S.H.I.E.L.D lanyard, seeing the season 1 bloopers and being shown an exclusive message from Patton Oswalt. It was absolute geek heaven.
