I was not too familiar with this character’s history, but the design is something I did know. Sheena: Queen of the Jungle is a character with a problematic past, one that dates all the way back to 1938. With such a long history there are several places you may recognize Sheena from, maybe it is because she has been considered one of the sexiest comic-book characters of all time, maybe it is because several musicians including Bruce Springsteen, The Ramones, and Ike Turner have all been referenced her. Or maybe you remember her from Her early 2000’s Tv series, 1984 film, or even the Bollywood films made about her.
In recent years writers have sought to reclaim and reinvent Sheena for the 21st century, which has me intrigued, and when I saw that the latest writer to take on this task was the great Stephen Mooney with the talented Jethro Morales providing the art I just had to give this one a go.
After reading the first issue I am hooked…
I cannot say too much without giving away too many spoilers, but this series will see Sheena taken from her home to hunt down survivors in the world’s biggest biodome. And issue one goes from search and rescue to Predator very quickly. So if you are someone who wants a modern twist on the pulpy jungle adventure then this will be the book for you. And if this short review has you interested then you can rejoice because this book will be on sale from the 3rd of November 2021.
