The Superpowers is a fantastic idea for a series that see’s Dynamite pull together all these old heroes that are currently free to use, or being used by them already. They are then placed into an epic team up that would make the Avengers jealous. Currently Dynamite have one of my personal favourite authors, Dan Abnett, helming the series which just makes this all the more enjoyable. In fact, this is a particular issue that I have been waiting for Red Sonja: The Superpowers #5 sees an epic showdown between two of comics most badass heroines. On one side we have the red headed warrior women Red Sonja and on the other we have the dark temptress Vampirella. And folks this will be one for the ages.
This is as action packed as a book can get. From start to finish it is one great big staggering showdown between Sonja and Vampirella. A battle that see’s each of these women give as good as they get. Abnett has done a fantastic job, because at no point does this ever get boring. I know you are probably wondering how can a fight be dull?
In other books where scenes like this happen it just leads to the plot going stale but in this book it just works. A big part of this working is all thanks to Johnathan Lau, whose art is seriously on point. It cannot be easy having the responsibility of bringing a book out that is just one big fight and making it constantly stimulating, but Lau effortlessly pulls it off.
At this point I am tempted to go into my highlights of the book but i do not want to spoil it for any of you, so let’s just say I did enjoy seeing Red Sonja’s unusual choice of tactics in her fight with Vampirella. Plus, it was pleasant to see Sonja, someone with no powers, take down Vampirella, someone that other members of their group struggled with.
Just a fantastic story from start to finish and one that I cannot wait to read more of. So, if you want to read more either head down to your local comic book store or grab a copy directly from Dynamite yourself.
