With the Mass Effect remaster due out in only a few months I could not help but get a little excited. And before we get into it yes I too would have preferred a remake, but I will be more than happy to  embrace the trilogy one more time. The thought of heading back out there to kick some Reaper ass really got me thinking about how much I truly loved those games and from there I could not help but wonder who where my top 10 squad-mates, then that jumped up to ranking them all in order, then I got back to my senses and decided to change it to who are my top five.

This was a lot tougher than I thought it would be. Dropping Thane and Kasumi from my top 5 was so tough. Especially since the Kasumi has one of the most fun introductory missions and the mission where you first meet Thane/ the one where you find his son are some of the best in all of Mass Effect. 

5.Mordin Solus

A Salarian geneticist, professor, and a former operative of the Special Tasks Group. When you meet him he is running a clinic on Omega to help the down trodden people of the space station. So why do I love this character?

Well he is a tiny little badass, he is willing to make the big sacrifice for the greater good. Even if it means doing something unspeakably evil, in his heart of hearts he knows he has to do what most cannot, simply because he has the capacity to go that extra mile.

Not only is he dangerous he is also highly intelligent, in fact a lot of the major discoveries that you achieve are all thanks to him. He does this with a smile on his face and a song in his heart, specifically classic musicals by Gilbert and Sullivan.

This song comes back again in part 3, though I wont spoil that one.

4.Garrus Vakarian

The ultimate Space Bro, Garrus is a rogue cop who will stop at nothing to get his man. When you first meet him he is frustrated by the rules and regulations that he needs to follow, while at the same time kind of judgey that no rules hold you back. Over time he gains a respect for you and becomes your most vocal backer.

If you play Femshep he is probably one of the most logical romance options and for either Shep is works well as that mate that gives you shit but loves you no matter what.

A skilled tactician and expert marksman his adventures rival even Shepherd’s. If he is not in your top 5 favorite squad mates then your playing the game wrong.

3.Jack

Now this is where I am going to piss a few people off, Jack is not everyone’s favorite character, and when I played as her I always had her alternate outfit on (So she was covered up) – I was either playing at my parents or in a room beside my girlfriend, I did not want to have anything to explain.

Jack was experimented on to become the ultimate weapon. She has lived a hard life, full of trauma and abuse. She hates authority and mistrusts almost anyone and everyone around her. Yet under that tough exterior lies a vulnerable heart that just wants to be cared for.

In Mass Effect 2 she is a fugitive on the run, thanks to you, who is haunted by the demons of her past. By the time 3 roles around she is a teacher who adores her students and has really grown into a somewhat respectable person. 

You cannot help but love the growth she makes throughout the franchise.

2.Urdnot Wrex

I love this guy so much that I played an entire play through of Mass Effect 1 where I literally just followed his instructions. where possible. Where not possible I just did the most “Wrex” thing possible. It was a very fun play through.

Wrex is not a very tactful person, he like many of his race believe in going in guns blazing and takes no shit from anyone. A famed krogan mercenary and bounty hunter, Urdnot Wrex is also one of the last remaining Krogan Battlemasters: these are individuals who combine powerful physic abilities with the devastating weaponry.

He rises from Bounty Hunter to skilled politician and eventually savior of his race. He always looks for who someone is rather than what they are and he would be number 1 on my list if it was not for the fact that he does not have enough screen time.

1.Tali’Zorah nar Rayya

And here it is my all time favorite Squad mate and romance option for Paragon Shep – because in my mind Renegade Shep is not good enough for her – Tali.

Tal

Tali is a Quarian. They are species that lost their home systems. The Quarians wander the galaxy in a flotilla of salvaged ships, secondhand vessels, and recycled technology. Due to their already weak immune system and the nature of growing up in a sterilized environment the Quarians all have to wear environmental suits in order to survive. Once a Quarian is of age they must go on a pilgrimage to obtain something of value for their fleet. It is on her Pilgrimage where we finally meet Tali.

She begins as a shy awkward girl and throughout the game changes into a leader of her people, a renegade and ever a warrior. She even grows to overcome some of her most deep seeded prejudice. All the while she maintains her awkwardness and that just makes her endearing to me and so many others.

if you are lacking in tech this women is a major asset for your team. She is my go to engineer and even gains the ability to send out a little drone to assist her in battle. What can I say I do love a gear head. Then her loyalty mission in Mass Effect 2 is one of my all time favorites, not for the combat but for the end when you get to use your powers of persuasion to alter the fate of an entire species. Plus yes i think I have a little bit of a crush on this fictional character, but I am far from the only one.
