I am sure plenty of you are suffering from the lockdown blues. So for far longer than I care to admit I sat down and compiled a list of songs that really cover every emotion that you would have while in lockdown.
Queen I want to break free
If you are feeling the lockdown blues few other songs will some up your feelings like this one. So pull out the Vacuum and get on your best high heels because God knows I want to break free. It is a fantastic song and one that predates my existence but being so iconic how could I afford to leave it off this list?
Madness – Our House
This one goes out to all the families stuck in their houses. You are in this together and that must be difficult. I just hope you are able to give yourself a little space and try not to get on each other nerves too much.
Johnny Cash – Folsom Prison Blues
Being under lockdown can feel like you are in your own personal prison so why not honor that feeling with this classic track by The Man In Black himself.Â
David Bowie – Space Oddity
Few words can some up how I feel better than Planet Earth is Blue and There is Nothing I can do about it, so it just seemed logical that Space Oddity made it into this list. This is a fantastic track and the loneliness and isolation it conveys is perfect for us all right now.
Fatboy Slim – Weapon Of Choice
I nearly had Whitney Houston at this spot, but then I though what better song to dance to when your alone than Weapon Of Choice. One of the best music videos of all time and a great track to life your spirits.
Tears For Fears – Mad World
Now to bring us back down to earth Mad World just seemed appropriate. After all how else would you describe a world where we just avoided WW3, Australia went on fire, The UK Flooded, Aliens where spotted, a virus ravaged nations and a man can get shot for going out jogging. This is a crazy, insane and mad world.
Christine And The Queens – People, I’ve Been Sad
One of my all time favorite singers I just love everything she creates. I know this song is a complete downer and will bum you out even more than Mad World, but that is the point. We all need to feel sad so lets just embrace that and be sad together.
Baz Luhrmann – Everybody’s Free To Wear Sunscreen
I do not know why but this one always gets me and if you wanna feel all of the emotions Everybody’s Free To Wear Sunscreen is the perfect track to add to your playlist. If you are not familial with it, it was originally an essay. “Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young”, commonly known by the title “Wear Sunscreen”, was a essay written as a hypothetical commencement speech by columnist Mary Schmich, originally published in June 1997 in the Chicago Tribune. Later Baz Lurhman took it and turned it into this song and it is utterly beautiful.
David Bowie – Life on Mars?
Yes Bowie is back on my list and there is nothing wrong with that. After the down to earth advise from our last track I feel that Life on Mars is the surrealist jam that will take you to a far off world and show you the possibilities of what stands before us all. Plus like any other Bowie song this is just an epic track.
Three Dog Night – One Is The Loneliest NumberÂ
Perfect for that moment when you are going to sit and look out your window as you return from Mars. Be lonely because that is totally fine and it is to be expected.Â
Francis and the Lights – Friends ft. Bon Iver and Kanye West
The video alone for this song makes it worth while. Not only will this make you think of your friends but when it is over you may want to recreate it with your friends.
Huey Lewis And The News – Hip To Be Square
Look it was between Dancing On The Ceiling and this. I picked this track because many of us are being forced to cut our hair and the songs links with a certain scene in American Psycho. So stick on your rain coat, grab your axe and see what happens next.
Flo Rida –Â My House
Because you are locked up and need something ridiculous to lift your spirits.
Talking heads – Once In A Lifetime
Another tune for anyone wondering how they managed to get to this point in their lives.Â
Ed Sheeran – I’m a Mess
The title alone explains this one…
Lisa Loeb – Stay (I Missed You)
Look if your trapped in your home by yourself I challenge you to not try and recreate this video. Or at least pretend that you are in it. A great song to sum up how we all feel missing someone. (I was close to putting Torn in at this spot but the sentiment of this song was just perfect)
Limp Bizkit – Break stuff
I do not like this band, I used to and am glad that that part of my life is over. Still if you are cooped up in your house and you are feeling a little frustrated this song may be for you, so why not find something that you own and actually break something.
Green day – Welcome to Paradise
I nearly put Basketcase on this list but I though after Break Stuff you might have trashed your house and would need to revel in the destruction you have wrought.
Eagle-Eye Cherry – Save Tonight
It is getting late and you really need to chill out and accept your fate and this is the perfect song to take you there. So grab a bottle of wine and enjoy.
Sigur Ros – hoppipolLa
With the last track you have accepted your fate and now I need you to put these last three on and go for your government allowed exercise. There are few songs that always make me smile and this is one of them.
Louis Armstrong – What a Wonderful World
I really considered putting in We Have All The Time In The World, but felt that at this point anyone would just need something to remind them that the world aint so bad and things will get better again. So ye just keep the faith and you will come out of this a better and stronger person.
Space oddity West World Version
And finally the best way to end this list with a Bowie Cover. If it is a sunny day just go out let the heat hit you close your eyes and listen to this track. If you have not seen the scene in West World where this was used you might not understand why I have picked it, but trust me this song is perfect for ending this list.
Bonus Track
Monty Python – Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life
Just one last bonus track because the lyrics will 100% apply to us all now. If you have not seen The Life Of Brian then some of this will be wasted on you, but still worth a listen.
Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse
When you’re chewing on life’s gristle
Don’t grumble, give a whistle
And this’ll help things turn out for the best
And
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse
When you’re chewing on life’s gristle
Don’t grumble, give a whistle
And this’ll help things turn out for the best
And
Always look on the bright side of life
Always look on the light side of life
Always look on the light side of life
If life seems jolly rotten
There’s something you’ve forgotten
And that’s to laugh and smile and dance and sing
When you’re feeling in the dumps
Don’t be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle, that’s the thing
And
There’s something you’ve forgotten
And that’s to laugh and smile and dance and sing
When you’re feeling in the dumps
Don’t be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle, that’s the thing
And
Always look on the bright side of life
(Come on)
Always look on the right side of life
(Come on)
Always look on the right side of life
For life is quite absurd
And death’s the final word
You must always face the curtain with a bow
Forget about your sin
Give the audience a grin
Enjoy it, it’s your last…
And death’s the final word
You must always face the curtain with a bow
Forget about your sin
Give the audience a grin
Enjoy it, it’s your last…
Have I missed anything?
What is on your isolation list?
