After Jon Bernthal’s brilliant portrayal of the character Frank Castle aka The Punisher in Netflix series Daredevil, it should come as no surprise when it was recently announced that he would get his own spin off series. The first season of Daredevil was a critically acclaimed success and won over many legions of fans with its dark and realistic portrayal of Daredevil. However the second season, as much as I enjoyed it, it did tend to drag on at times. The saving grace in the second season was Frank Castle/The Punisher who stole every scene and became an instant fan favourite. I’ll admit that when I first heard that Jon Bernthal was cast as Frank Castle/ The Punisher I wasn’t sure if he was the right actor to portray the character but boy did he prove me wrong. While Daredevil spent the second season struggling to not kill anyone, The Punisher was having a field day and he kept piling on the body count throughout the second series. I know what he is doing is wrong but I can’t help but root for this vigilante, just like how I couldn’t help but root for Dexter even though he was a serial killer.
I and many other fans would watch each episode of the second season of Daredevil just to watch his scenes and now that The Punisher will have his own spin off series things can only get better. Finally we get a Netflix and Marvel series that will focus on well let’s just say someone who isn’t a superhero, I mean he’s the bad guy. I would say it could be something similar to the Dexter series as you will see The Punisher kill those he thinks deserve it but he does it in much more brutal ways. If you haven’t seen the second season of Daredevil yet then let’s just say that The Punisher makes Dexter Morgan look tame and he certainly doesn’t kill as cleanly as Dexter does. In a way I think the character of The Punisher is someone who is easier for the reader/viewer to relate to as he is grounded in reality. At his core he is just a man who seeks revenge, he doesn’t have super powers or heightened senses like Jessica Jones, Luke Cage or Daredevil. Of course it didn’t hurt that his fight scenes in Daredevil season two where amazing to watch, I mean who would mess a guy who could fight his way out of a cell block full of inmates who wanted to kill him? I’m hoping there will be plenty of well choreographed fight scenes in the spin off series.
The spin off series will focus on military veteran Frank Castle/The Punisher as he brings his own lethal form of justice to Hell’s Kitchen. Of course there could be cameo appearances from Daredevil himself, after all they both live in Hell’s Kitchen and it ain’t big enough for them not to constantly butt heads with each other.
“We want to thank the fans who are clamoring for more of Jon’s stunning and powerful performance as Frank Castle from ‘Marvel’s Daredevil,’” said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb, “Now combined with Showrunner Steve Lightfoot’s compelling writing, we’re thrilled to bring ‘Marvel’s The Punisher’ to Netflix.”
“Jon hooked our global audience with his performance as Frank Castle from the moment he stepped on screen in ‘Marvel’s Daredevil,’ and we are looking forward to seeing more of him in this role under the vision of Steve Lightfoot,” said Cindy Holland, Netflix Vice President of Original Content.
“For me, the complexity and unpredictability of Frank Castle make him an incredibly compelling character and I couldn’t be more excited to dive into his world,” said Executive Producer and Showrunner, Steve Lightfoot. “After watching Jon’s performance in ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ I could not be more excited to be working with him to further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero in a show of his own.”
With 20th Century Fox reportedly pulling out of Hall H presentations for its films at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con International, I think it’s about time Netflix stepped in with a panel for Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, Daredevil, Jessica Jones and of course The Punisher.
