Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #2 (2016) Comic Book Review

What can i say I am loving this new Power Rangers comic, if you haven’t read my review of issue 1 then you can check it out by clicking here. By taking a modern approach to the retelling of Power Rangers story, we have been given a more in depth look into their universe. We now get to see what the kids do during their past times, we also find out more about their family life, their hobbies and their jobs, it’s weird but this makes these characters seem a lot more human. Like so many others I was a fan of this series when I was younger and I find the fact that BOOM! Studios is taking these characters and really fleshing them out really appealing. The best way to explain this is Reese’s pieces, its adding chocolate to peanut butter but you really can’t beat that mix.

No hero is as good as their villain and in this case the people behind the comic have brought back one of my favorite Power Rangers villains (and along side Pink Ranger one of my first crushes) Scorpina. For those of you who don’t remember she was the badass hench women from season one whose actor left and was never recast. Facts you need to know, she could take on and defeat multiple rangers at a time and transformed into a a giant scorpion monster, I guess that this seemed like a better idea than having her turn into a giant women because well that would look odd. Along with Scorpina we get the return of the Putty Patrol and Rita laying some sinister mind games, weather it be threatening the family of her enemy or literally messing with someones mind, this Rita is a much more sinister and ruthless villain than her TV counterpart.

This series is rapidly becoming one of my favorite reads, it goes from strength to strength taking an already established mythos and adding to it by giving it a few more layers, showing the characters vulnerabilities whether it be Billy’s self confidence, Kimberly’s family issues, Jason’s role in the group or even Tommy’s drive to go solo, this series has added some great perspectives to something I once loved and I am really looking forward to the next issue.
