Anyone who heads to SXSW will know all too well how hard it can be to get accommodation in downtown Austin, Texas. If you have the stomach for it how would you like to stay a night in the Bates Motel. Norman Bates could be checking you in on your first night in Austin, Texas. If you make it through the night you can enjoy your day at the 2015 SXSW Festival.
During the 2015 SXSW Festival in Austin this month, A&E will open the doors to a replica of the iconic hotel that will feature props and decor from the show, a Bates-themed GIF booth and a few other surprises.
Here’s a rendering of the hotel from the Psycho prequel, which is being built from the ground up in a parking lot in Austin:
“We decided to build [rather than take over an existing space] in order to ensure that the Motel was as true to the ‘real’ Bates Motel as possible,” Elizabeth Luciano, vice president of marketing at A&E, tells Mashable. “We want our fans to feel like they are stepping inside Norma and Norman Bates’ world in a truly unique and innovative way.”
The replica — located at 316 East Cesar Chavez St. — will also be an actual functional hotel, with three functioning rooms that can accommodate six guests per night. (No word on the condition of the showers.)
A&E is holding a contest that will allow a fan and one guest to stay overnight. (You can enter here.) On-site visitors will also be able to enter for a chance to stay a night.
“We looked at several major cities to place the Bates Motel, but we kept coming back to SXSW because we know that attendees at SXSW are big Bates fans,” Luciano said. “And putting up a motel next to the convention center felt so contextually relevant — hotel rooms in Austin are always impossible to find during SXSW, so why not seek to help in a clever way that rewards fans?”
The Bates Motel at SXSW will be open March 13-21, 8:30 a.m.-7p.m. daily.
Bates Motel returns to A&E for Season 3 on March 9 at 9 p.m. ET.
