Steven Spielberg Shows Us Why His West Side Story Is Worth Seeing

I think many of us where wondering why remake a classic like West Side Story, the original was an absolute icon but it seems that Spielberg may have found a way to relight that fire in himself because it seems he is back and he is bringing his A-Game.

If you are unfamiliar with West Side Story, it is a modern day retelling of Romeo and Juliet. The story is set in the 1950’s, in the Upper West Side of New York City. Back then it was  a multiracial, blue-collar neighborhood. West Side Story explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The members of The Sharks, from Puerto Rico, are rivals of The Jets, a white gang. The young protagonist, Tony, a former member of the Jets and best friend of the gang’s leader, Riff, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks.

The original was iconic because it was one of the first big pieces of musical theater to deal with actual social issues, plus it had some really catchy tunes.

This one looks like it could be a real return to form for Spielberg and I for one am really looking forward to seeing it.
