It seems that 2020 is going to get that little bit worse since Ruby Rose is choosing to leave her role as Batwoman. In a statement the actress had this to say:
“I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season,” She went on to say. “This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles. I am beyond appreciative to Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Caroline Dries for not only giving me this incredible opportunity, but for welcoming me into the DC universe they have so beautifully created. Thank you Peter Roth and Mark Pedowitz and the teams at Warner Bros. and the CW who put so much into the show and always believed in me. Thank you to everyone who made season one a success—I am truly grateful.”
Now for all you Batwoman Fans The CW plans to recast the role. In their own statement they had this to say:
Warner Bros. Television, the CW and Berlanti Productions thank Ruby for her contributions to the success of our first season and wish her all the best. The studio and network are firmly committed to Batwoman’s second season and long-term future, and we—along with the show’s talented creative team—look forward to sharing its new direction, including the casting of a new lead actress and member of the LGBTQ community, in the coming months.”
I think most of the fans are quite saddened by this. Ruby Rose was excellent in the part. She went above and beyond and helped take a series that I thought was going to suck, even if early trailers deceived me, and made it everything we could have wanted. It was action packed, addictive to watch, dark and even a little silly, everything a Batman series should be. Only it wasn’t about Batman and instead focused on Batwoman helping give us a new and superior perspective, something a lot of people need to see.
So why did Ruby leave the series?
Well currently no one knows the reason for it. Rose has stepped away from social media for the time being and that could be a big clue. If you cast your mind back to when she was first cast in the role there was a lot of controversy. This was all due to her not being Jewish like the character is in the comics and also her identifying as gender fluid when the character is a cisgender lesbian. This is what I call bitchy people online who think their opinions matter. If you want lesbians to only play lesbians then an actor who identifies as a lesbian is going to have a lot less work. The point of being an actor is that you play roles that are not for you. Obviously things like Brown face are not ok but I know that is where someone will take this argument and for a character who is Transgender you would want someone who is trans to play that role, though again that depends where the character is on their personal journey. But I digress, Ruby Rose was amazing in the role.
Another reason could be that she did injure herself while filming the first season. During a stunt gone wrong faced potential paralysis and needed emergency surgery to prevent permanent damage. The fact that she returned to continue her work on the series shows how dedicated she is to her craft and of course everyone else who works on the show.
A third reason is and this according to Deadline, the decision for Rose to leave the series was mutual as she was not a good fit for the hectic schedule of a network series that runs over twenty episodes per season. Which is fine, she is a grown women and she is allowed to do what ever she wants. I say this because some fans feel that they have a certain right to these actors and honestly, you don’t. I know that is often a hard pill to swallow but seriously she was amazing in the series and I am sure most of us wish her well. The show will still continue, so please people do not be dicks about this.
