Welcome to Hell – SNL’s most important video of 2017

Honestly I am not sure that I’m the guy to be talking about this video, god knows I have like 3 projects in the works that though they are not inherently sexist, someone who does not know me would possibly assume that I am a chauvinist pig. God knows that in the past I have been far from perfect in my treatment of the opposite gender, obviously as I reached by 20’s and then came into my 30’s my personality has continued to grow and shift. A lot of this positive growth is down to the fact that many of my closest friends are strong women, talented artists, political activists, minorities within certain professional fields, those willing to climb the corporate ladder, the person who helped launch this site and of course the bro’s willing to call me on my shit (ladies if you ever read this I should point out many of you fall into multiple categories). I am truly blessed for the lot of you. Unfortunately most men end up isolated from women and this does go both ways. If we are isolated from each other then we never get the chance to see how bad things can truly get. To be honest even I find it shocking when I hear about what some women have to deal with…

Finally getting to my point, this particular SNL skit lampoons the current attitudes of men on these topics, using what can only be described as a Katie Perry California Girls inspired video. But this sugar coated topping belies a much darker message, none of this is new, this has been going on since the dawn of time. I know we can argue that gender roles where originally natural in our evolution, but we do not live in a natural world anymore, things have changed and men really need to evolve with the times.  What particularly hits home for me is the part sung by the always awesome Saoirse Ronan “Now ‘House of Cards’ is ruined, and that really sucks. Well here’s a list of stuff that’s ruined for us,”  followed by said list:

  1. Parking
  2. Walking
  3. Uber
  4. Ponytails
  5. Bathrobes
  6. Nighttime
  7. Drinking
  8. Hotels
  9. Vans

Of course I would be remiss if I failed to mention Leslie Jones appearing to point out that Women of Color get it far worse. Guys this video though funny and even kind of silly is very important. I am well aware that most men out there are not activity part of the problem and most of us are simply blind to its existence, just give it a listen, I am not saying it will change your life, but take it in and realize that maybe the “Femminazis”, may not be wrong. Other than that, its a catchy assed tune that may or may have been on while I was cooking yesterday.
