Twenty years ago none of us probably could have ever imagined that technology would evolve at such a fast pace or that our lifestyles would change so much with it. Some of us remember before the internet became such a cultural phenomenon, our days were spent expressing our creativity and using our imagination. We didn’t have social media in our lives; instead you curled up by the fire with a good book or went out camping enjoying the great outdoors. In fact growing up I remember watching my mum cooking various delicious recipes from the cookbooks she bought back from our holidays to Hong Kong. I guess it stuck with me since I love to bake, cupcakes are my specialty.
The only problem that comes with when you cook or bake anything is it can be messy, time consuming and it takes up most of the space on your kitchen counter. In today’s current generation we no longer have the time do to anything, we are all so caught up in our work, with social media, the TV, family and our friends. Simple tasks such as baking or cooking can end up becoming a time consuming and daunting prospect (washing the dishes and cleaning up the kitchen), which means we end up choosing to make something quick and easy instead. I’ve been guilty on multiple occasions where I bought myself takeaway or popping a ready meal to heat up in the microwave.
What if there was something out there that could save you time, hassle and help you become more creative with your baking? Something that would inspire you to make recipes you never even knew with the ingredients that you already have in your kitchen. The solution could be Drop, a scale that connects with your iPad and an app to assist you with your baking ideas.
Ben Harris, co-founder of Drop, will be heading to the Web Summit to speak about Drop on the Food Stage. His talk is scheduled from 12pm to 12.20pm on Tuesday 4th November 2014 at the RDS Arena in Dublin. Drop will also be one of the many start-up companies exhibiting at Web Summit, so make sure you find their stand for a live demonstration.
So what exactly is Drop and what is it that makes it a must have for your kitchen? Drop was founded in 2012 in Dublin, Ireland and is based in San Francisco and Dublin. Drop is an iPad-connected kitchen scale that works with their exclusive app to ensure home bakers consistently get great results using their specially selected interactive recipes. The Drop scale is able to rescale quantities and share tips. It’s the smart baking assistant at your side, helping every step of the way. Drop will also suggest ingredient substitutes, create shopping lists, and if you leave the kitchen while baking, alert you on your iPhone when your creation is ready.
The Drop scale connects to your iPad via Bluetooth low energy (BLE). BLE works with iPad Air, iPad (3rd generation or later), iPad mini (all models). The recipe app will only work on iPad 3 or higher. Certain companion features–like weighing without recipes or timer alerts and shopping lists–will work on iPhone 5 models, iPhone 4S, and iPod Touch (5th gen or later).
Before you can begin all you need is two things -an iPad and the Bluetooth enabled smart scale.
Once you have the app downloaded you can start making recipes without the need for measuring jugs or guessing. You simply pour each ingredient into your mixing bowl, which is placed on top of the Drop scale, and the app will tell you when to stop. Without the need for other kitchen equipment to measure, you have already reduced the mess you would be creating in your kitchen. It also allows you to speed up the time you spend making the recipes as you can automatically add each ingredient after each other without the need to measure since Drop takes care of it for you.
With the Drop app you can easily browse through their list of recipes, which means there is no longer a need to store cook books in your kitchen. Inspiration will be available with the recipes coming from people around the world; you don’t need to be a professional chef to have amazing homemade recipes.
Even if you don’t have enough flour to make your chosen recipe, the app will update to show you alternative recipes you can make with the ingredients you do have. If you don’t have an ingredient, the app will provide ingredients you can use as a replacement. The Drop scale is also heat resistant; it can even withstand a pot of boiling water being placed on top of it.
Drop caters for everyone, whether you are baking for just yourself, your friends or family as the app allows you to change the recipe to adapt to how many servings you need to bake for. There are recipes available suitable for everyone whether you are a vegetarian, vegan or require something gluten free.
Drop will provide this generation and the next with a simple and streamline way of baking. No matter who you are or what your occupation is, even if you have little or no baking skills Drop will help you reach the next level of kitchen skills. They are currently working on developing an android app so that they can cater to those without an iPad and expand their market to include android tablets.
