Though I am familiar with the near legendary real life Ms Page this is my first time delving into the comic book world of this iconic women. And it was a wild ride from start to finish, this book is utterly unique. In summery Bettie Page: Queen of the Nile is a great time travel story that is entertaining from start to finish.
So before we get into it in our world Bettie Page was an American model who gained notoriety in the 1950’s for her pin-up photos. Often referred to as the “Queen of Pinups,” her shoulder length jet-black hair, blue eyes, and trademark bangs have made her an icon of the 20th century. One might argue that without Bettie Page you would not have Katie Perry or Madonnas more quintessential looks, without Bettie Page you would not have the Suicide Girls or even the Silk Specter, scratch that without Bettie Page you would not have Dita Von Teese. That is how big a deal this women is.
So how does Bettie Page, a legend of the 20th century fit into the world of comics?
Exceptionally well, that’s how.
The book is a brilliant send up to the pulp stories of the early 20th century, so yes it is a tad offensive but it is written in this very specific style. And did I mention that at one point is has a time travelling Bettie Page using a rocket pack to fly through an ancient jungle as a tribe hunt her?
What other books can promise that?
This is a fantastic collection filled with unique and gorgeous art, the kind of art you just do not see in the average comic. So if you want something for your collection that is truly extraordinary then I highly recommend you grab yourself a copy of Bettie Page: Queen of the Nile.
