Krypton is the series no one asked for, but it’s what we all need!

I both a DC fanboy and Marvel fanboy so every time they announce a new show I fear that we are going to reach over saturation, then I watch the show and I am usually blown away. This is not the early 2000’s and people have learnt their lessons and understand now that the superhuman aspect of comic book based series should act as a backdrop for real emotional human driven stories, about ordinary people driven into extraordinary situations.

Krypton is a series that may be able to go further than all other comic book adaptations for two simple reasons, 1 – It won’t be completely bounded by the human aspect and 2 – it had a lot more room to manoeuvre in what changes they can and cannot make. Set two generations before the destruction of the legendary Man of Steel’s home planet, Krypton follows Superman’s grandfather (Cameron Cuffe) — whose House of El was ostracised and shamed — as he fights to redeem his family’s honour and save his beloved world from chaos.  Which leads me to believe that this series could end up like a War of the Roses (Or maybe Game of Thrones) meets House of Cards, which I suppose makes it like Dune.

Think about it, it’s either going to follow one of these two roots.

  1. The political path – This is where we have a politically charged series on an alien world, where the house of El  must come out of obscurity to pull itself back into the limelight, through alliances and back room deals.
  2. . The Medieval style – This is where a house that has been shunned builds itself up from nothing and takes back power through force. (Game of Thrones, War of the roses or The Sengoku period)

Personally I think it will be a mixture of both. This will be a gamble and it will not be easy to pull off, you will need to establish Kryptonian culture, Kryptonian politics,Kryptonian houses and what makes them different. It can and has been done before, with Game of Thrones, so it could work here.

Krypton is a gamble but if done right it will be a great addition to the Superman Mythos. Hopefully the panel at San Diego Comic-Con will give a better insight on what to expect.

The cast and crew of Krypton will be flying into San Diego Comic-Con next month to take part in a panel on Saturday 22nd July from ‪1:15–1:45 p.m in Indigo Ballroom. There will also be an exclusive video presentation of the upcoming new series, which will be filmed in my hometown of Belfast,Northern Ireland this summer.
