Lazer Team (2015) Film Review

Since the first moment I heard the guys from the Red Team discussing how a warthog should be called a puma I have been an avid fan of all things Rooster Teeth. Maybe you’re like me and you have been watching since the days of Red vs Blue, or maybe you’re like many of our writers and found them through the brilliant web series RWBY, or maybe shows like Immersion and Camp Camp have drawn you in or somehow you have managed to miss all these shows all together. If you have missed these I will tell you that Rooster Teeth are internet royalty. They were the first web series I have ever seriously followed, before I knew you could have such a thing and they are some of the webs best comedy talent. So when I heard that these guys where making their own movie I had to check it out.

In 2014 Rooster Teeth sought funding for Lazer Tean through IndiGogo and gained more than 37,000 backers raising nearly $2.5 million for the film’s production. With this support, the films effects and design value certainly did not suffer offering an impressive backdrop for a lower budget action film.

Lazer Team is something special, it’s an homage to classic science fiction, a labour of love, hilarious and just plain fun all wrapped into one. It follows the exploits of a team of misfit idiots who end up having to become Earth’s champions in an intergalactic battle for the planet’s very existence. Our misfit’s consist of: a washed up town Sheriff, his daughter’s moron boyfriend, the town drunk and the local idiot who accidentally intercepted an advanced alien armour meant for Earth’s true champion. This all sounds very ridiculous and in a brilliant stroke of meta comedy the film tackles this.

This film is truly independent and that is what makes it brilliant. Rooster Teeth was created by a group of friends and that is what this film feels like to me, a group of mates getting together and making something that they would all enjoy and be proud of. If you’re a fan of movies where a plucky young group of heroes leave their mundane lives to do something great then this is for you and if you’re sick of the overly serious super hero movies we have now then this is also a must watch, it’s a lil corny but it’s a whole lot of awesome. The film takes some of what we expect to happen and twists it in a delightful way to keep things fresh. The comedy is going to be the main draw for everyone but there is some great action, a few tender moments and even some sad times. this is an adventure story that is going to have you captivated right from the start!

The film made its debut at Fantastic Fest in September 2015 followed by a run at Toronto After Dark. It was released theatrically on January 27, 2016 before becoming available on SVOD as a launch title for YouTube Red on February 10, 2016.

Lazer Team is currently available on DVD thanks to Anchor Bay Entertainment, the special features include deleted and extended scenes, bloopers, and VFX breakdown.
