2014 mtvU Woodie Awards And Festival - Backstage

MTV announced that Jack Antonoff (lead singer and songwriter for Bleachers) will be hosting the 2015 mtvU Woodie Awards live from SXSW on friday 20th March. Jack Antonoff will be making his third appearance on the Woodies stage, having previously performed with his bands Fun. and Bleachers at the “MTV Woodie Awards Festival.”

“It means a great deal to me to be hosting the Woodies because Fun. played the Woodies before we had any success and the same for Bleachers last year,”said Jack Antonoff. “It’s been a platform for the two bands I’ve most recently been a part of to really go somewhere. I couldn’t be more excited to come back and host the show.”

New performers announced for the awards event include the British soulful synth pop trio Years & Years. This upcoming band from London supported Sam Smith on tour in 2014 and consist of a group of talented individuals. In fact Years & Years singer Olly Alexander has given up a promising acting career to try to make the breakthrough with his band, his films include The Riot Club.

Olly Alexander met his bandmates in London but they hail from different parts of the world. Synth player Emre Turkmen was born in Holland and lived in Turkey before moving to the UK at the age of 11. Bassist and keyboard player Mikey Goldsworthy is Australian, while Alexander is British. The band recently released their U.S. debut Y&Y EP on Interscope Records and performed their first U.S. show to a sold out crowd at Brooklyn’s Rough Trade, with a forthcoming West Coast tour having already sold out. Years & Years also won the prestigious BBC “Sound of 2015” Poll, an annual list that has a history of predicting chart-topping acts since 2003. The band joins such previous winners as Sam Smith, Adele, Ellie Goulding, HAIM, and Jessie J. Their song “King” recently hit No. 1 on the U.K. charts.

“We’re so excited to be playing the mtvU Woodie Awards as one of their ‘Artist to Watch’ nominees,” said Years & Years. “It’s been a really incredible start to the year for us and we’re very, very grateful for MTV’s support.”
