Last night we decided to go see the Roller Derby. Now there are a lot of people out there who have their heads under rocks and probably don’t know what Roller Derby is so I think I will give you a brief run down. This contact sport is played by two teams of five. Originally finding a large fan base in the 1940’s it eventually became a form of sports entertainment, which lead to its eventual stagnation. Since the beginning of the 21st century a grass roots revival has seen the return of the sport.
As I already stated roller derby is played by two teams of five members simultaneously skating counterclockwise on a circuit track. Each team designates a scoring player (the “jammer”); the other four members are “blockers.” One blocker can be designated as a “pivot”—a blocker allowed to become a jammer in the course of play. The jammer wears a helmet cover bearing two stars; the pivot wears a striped cover; the remaining members’ helmets are uncovered.
The bout is played in two periods of 30 minutes. Point scoring occurs during “jams”: plays that last up to two minutes. During a jam, points are scored when a jammer on a scoring pass (every pass a jammer makes through the pack after the initial pass) laps members of the opposing team. Each team’s blockers use body contact, changing positions, and other tactics to assist its jammer to score while hindering the opposing team’s jammer. Certain types of blocks and other play are violations; referees call penalties and require violators to serve time in a penalty box.
Its a fast paced, aggressive sport primarily played by women and has a great sense of comradely I highly advise anyone to go and check it out.
Saturday the 26th of October had two match to check out
- Norn Iron Maidens vs East Coast Cyclones
- Belfast Banshees vs Boom Town Rollers – Bashing Pumpkins – (Exhibition Team)
The first match was off to a great start with No 44 – Cleo Smacktra giving us a strong lead, even gaining the home team a 39 point jam in jam nine. The Norn Iron Maidens dominated this match, with great blocking by 64 – Danihell and great jamming by the already mentioned Cleo Smacktra and 62 Moslay. The Cyclones tried their best but in the end we beat them 271 – 200.
We where not so lucky in the second match. No 20 President Garfeild of the bashing Pumpkins was one of the best players we saw that night and she dominated the match, that’s not to say that the home team played badly, on the contrary the Belfast Banshees put up a solid defense, especially number 88 – Sylvia Wrath. This was a very tight match where the Banshees didn’t give up in the last few minutes. These girls are as touch as nails and showed some great character sadly the score finished with 130 for the Banshees and 189 for the Pumpkins, well there is always next time.
