Let us be real for a minute here, I am going to be saying some things that no one is going to like but let’s just wade into this shit show. Love him or hate him it is a tragedy that Night In The Woods Designer Alec Holowka thought it would be necessary to take his life. The sad news comes days after allegations began to circulate against Holowka, as multiple people accused him of abusive behavior.
In a statement his sister would go on to say: “Alec Holowka, my brother and best friend, passed away this morning. Those who know me will know that I believe survivors and I have always done everything I can to support survivors, those suffering from mental illnesses, and those with chronic illnesses. Alec was a victim of abuse and he also spent a lifetime battling mood and personality disorders. I will not pretend that he was not also responsible for causing harm, but deep down he was a person who wanted only to offer people care and kindness. It took him a while to figure out how.”
To explain how we got here we need to jump back to Monday night. Zoe Quinn said in a Twitter post on late Monday night that Holowka isolated her, and a friend, for a month in Winnipeg, Canada, where he sexually assaulted and used abusive language against Quinn.
Quinn would release a statement where she described being in a vulnerable position, recovering from a separate sexual assault from a month earlier, when Holowka invited her to stay with him in Winnipeg. “I spent a lot of that month hiding from him in the bathroom,” Quinn alleged. “His moods would shift and he’d throw things and hurt himself seemingly at random and blame me.”
Holowka allegedly “lashed out” at Quinn once she sent a “cordial and friendly break up email” to him after leaving Winnipeg. “He made sure to blacklist me at important industry events,” Quinn said. “He tried to ruin the career I’d barely started. To a degree it worked.”
In response to these allegations Alec Holowka quickly found himself isolated – especially since other similar reports came out and they did not paint a good picture of the young designer. It was this isolation that probably drove him to take his life. This is possibly the reason why as a society we moved to due process and shouldn’t be using Twitter to air grievances. Though the fact that Zoe Quinn felt is necessary to use social media is proof that the games industry and possibly the modern world need to get up to date with how best to deal with these situations.
Due to his death a lot of Holowka’s fan have begun bombarding Zoe Quinn with abuse and hatred, treating her as a murderer. Honestly I can see how some might think that, but no, this is not the case. Even if mentally he was in a bad place, it is still not her fault. If you really are a fan of Alec Holowka then do something to honor his memory, do not sit and rage against a women you hate and do not rage into the void. Be constructive do some good even his sister had this to say:
“And in case it’s not already fucking obvious, Alec *specifically said* he wished the best for Zoë and everyone else, so don’t use our grief as an excuse to harass people,” she wrote. “Go outside, take care of someone, and work towards preventing these kinds of things in the first place.”
Please just take a step back and do not try and cause more harm in this world, we all share the same blood do not try and make this situation worse!
