When you are walking around San Diego Comic-Con International everyone greets you and with a smile on their face. They want to know where you got something from, what something you have is, who you are dressed as and more than likely they have a common interest with you.
San Diego Comic-Con International has bought in Fandoms of all kinds from all over the World, from California all the way around to New Zealand.
What’s a Fandom you ask? A Fandom is a community that surrounds a TV show, a film, a book, a comic book, a game, Actors, Musicians etc. The members of Fandoms can include Cosplayers, Writers, Artists, Gamers and just plain old die hard fans.
Fandoms often consist of forums, live journal communities, social media, Tumblrs, websites and people. It’s a way for fans to get together and communicate their appreciation for their favourite TV shows, films, books, games, Actors, Bands etc. This is where the MTV Fandom Awards was born.
MTV Fandom Awards and Fan Fest is back for a third year at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con International 2016. “The ‘Fandom of the Year’ award celebrates some of the loudest fandoms in pop culture,” said Ryan Kroft, Senior Vice President of Programming Specials and Events for MTV. It’s a no wonder they have decided to come back for a third year.
Having attended the first year in 2014 and the mtvU Woodie Awards at SXSW 2015, we can say without a doubt that MTV knows how to party and take care of their fans.
If you want free food, drinks and entertainment then make sure you head down to Petco Park during San Diego Comic-Con, on Thursday 21st July, for the 2016 MTV Fandom Awards and Fan Fest. The “MTV Fandom Fest” is a free party at Petco Park open to all Comic-Con badge holders with food, drinks, games and giveaways beginning at 6.30pm PT. It will lead into the 8:00 p.m. PT taping of the “Fandom Awards.” The show will air on Sunday, July 24 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.Even if you don’t have a valid Comic-Con badge, fear not as there is always hope. Priority admittance is give to Comic-Con badge holders due to limited capacity but that doesn’t mean those without shouldn’t try. If you are a Comic-Con badge holder then there is nothing to lose unless you intend to queue overnight for the Hall H panels on the following day (Friday 22nd July).
The hosts during lasts year’s 2015 Fandom Awards and Fan Fest included Tyler Posey, Bella Thorne, special “MTV Fandom” correspondents “Girl Code’s” Carly Aquilino and social media star Lohanthony. MTV has yet to announce who will be hosting this year’s MTV Fandom Awards and Fan Fest but I would say Tyler Posey would most likely be hosting the event again. There will also be live acts but MTV have yet to announce which bands will be playing.
For this year there will be two new categories “Bandom of the Year” and “Animation Fandom of the Year.” The award show honours the fans whose tenacious excitement pushes movies, TV, music, theater and video games from subculture to mainstream worldwide success.
Voting is currently open at fandomawards.mtv.com and will continue until Wednesday 20th July, 2016, the preview night at San Diego Comic-Con International 2016 and the day before the Fandom Awards and Fan Fest takes place.
Nominees for “Fandom of the Year,” presented by JOLLY RANCHER Candy, will feature 32 nominees going head-to-head across multiple platforms in a special social tournament spanning movies, TV dramas, TV comedies and, for the first time ever, video games. The nominees for “Ship of the Year,” will be voted on exclusively on Tumblr. Nominees in both categories will be announced on Friday, July 8.
“Shipping on Tumblr is serious business, so I’m thrilled we’re able to celebrate all of the community’s passions by opening it up to a democratic process with MTV Fandom Awards, said Amandalyn Ferri, Tumblr’s Culture & Trends expert. “Personally, I ship #Karmy (“Faking It”), but we’ll see which couple’s hypothetical love prevails when voting on Tumblr ends and San Diego Comic-Con begins.”
The nominees for the 2016 “MTV Fandom Awards” include:
