10 Upcoming Sequels To Get Excited About

Tis the season for festive cheer ……sequels? Last year, sequels made up 9 of the top 10 highest grossing movies of 2024. And after recent successful sequels like Freakier Friday, The Conjuring: Last Rites, Jurassic World Rebirth and 28 Years Later, Hollywood looks to be heavily invested in continuing the trend with several more being announced this past week alone. While we’re always a fan of new original stories being told, we also can’t resist follow ups to our favourite films and franchises. Here we list 10 upcoming sequels we’re most excited for.

  1. Gremlins 3

The most recent sequel announced is the third instalment of the Gremlins franchise which was confirmed this week. It’s been 41 years since the original film was released and 35 years since the second film hit screens. An animated prequel television series was released in 2023 but audiences have been calling out for another movie for a long time. No word on plot or casting yet but original writer Chris Columbus is set to write and direct the film. Set for a November 19th 2027 release date, it’ll be a while before fans will get to see the film but we’re sure it’ll be worth the wait.

2. Scream 7

Continuing with the horror sequels, Scream is set to unmask its seventh instalment in the franchise. What makes this one particularly exciting is the amount of returning cast. With the likes of Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Matthew Lillard and Scott Foley, it feels truly nostalgic. Audiences won’t have to wait too long for Scream 7 with it scheduled to be released on February 27th 2026.

3. Scary Movie 6

The perfect pairing to the Scream 7 announcement was the confirmation of the release of Scary Movie 6, the horror comedy parody series, on June 12th 2026. The sixth instalment, which comes after a 13 year gap, will serve as both a sequel and reboot of the franchise. With the Wayans brothers coming on board to write the script and Anna Faris, Regina Hall and Marlon Wayans returning to the cast, it is hoped that the film will be able to recapture the humour and energy that the earlier films had. Not much is yet known about the plot but Marlon Wayans suggested that recent horror films such as Get Out, Nope, Longlegs, Heretic, and Sinners could be parodied in Scary Movie 6.

4. Toy Story 5

Moving into more family friendly territory, Toy Story returns with an unexpected but very welcome sequel on June 19th 2026. With Tom Hanks saying that the fourth film would be the final chapter in the series and the movie wrapping up everyone’s storylines, it was surprising when Toy Story 5 was announced. However, we’re always here for more Toy Story and it will be interesting to see where these characters are after 7 years away. Tom Hanks, Joan Cusack, and Tim Allen are all reprising their roles, with Anna Faris starring as new character Lilypad.

5. Now You See Me: Now You Don’t

If you’re not wanting to wait till next year for a much anticipated sequel, the third instalment in the Now You See Me franchise is being released this week on November 14th 2026. After a 9 year hiatus, the team are back together, with a returning Isla Fisher who was absent from the second movie, to take on their biggest heist yet. In even better news, the studio must be impressed with what they saw of Now You See Me 3 as it is reported that a fourth film is already in development.

6. Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery

Another 2025 sequel set to be released is the latest chapter in the Knives Out Mystery series. Everyone’s favourite detective Benoit Blanc returns to solve another case in Wake Up Dead Man. With Rian Johnson back to direct and a star studded cast, the third instalment looks to be just as entertaining as its predecessors. Already premiered at TIFF to rave reviews, the movie will be released in cinemas on November 26th 2025 and will hit on Netflix on December 12th 2025.

7. Enola Holmes 3

As well as Wake Up Dead Man, Netflix will be releasing another mystery sequel. Enola Holmes is set to go on another adventure, this time in Malta, for the third film in the Enola Holmes franchise. Reports have confirmed that the film will be darker and more mature than the previous iterations, perhaps reflecting the titular character’s growth. Helena Bonham Carter, Henry Cavill, Louis Partridge, and of course Millie Bobby Brown will return. No official release date has been announced yet but with Brown confirming that filming wrapped back in June, fans shouldn’t have too long to wait.

8. Violent Night 2

A sequel fans will have to wait a little bit longer for is the follow up to the action comedy Christmas movie, Violent Night, which will be released just in time for the festive season next year on December 4th. Not much is known about the plot yet but with David Harbour returning as Santa, and Kristen Bell being announced as Mrs Claus, it promises to deliver the perfect balance of laughs and gore.

9. The Devil Wears Prada 2

A sequel 20 years in the making, The Devil Wears Prada will finally be getting another instalment on our screens on May 1st 2026. The plot sees Miranda Priestly’s struggle to adapt to the decline of print media and embrace the digital age, a story which feels very relevant to today. Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci are all reprising their characters, and Aline Brosh McKenna will again write the screenplay which makes us confident the sequel will deliver.

10. Practical Magic 2

An even longer awaited sequel than the aforementioned Devil Wears Prada, is Practical Magic 2. The cult classic movie’s second chapter will be released 28 years after the first film was released. Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Dianne Wiest, and Stockard Channing are all returning with new cast members including Joey King, Maisie Williams, and Lee Pace joining them. The film sequel will be based on the book sequel which means that the story should please fans. The movie will hit cinemas on September 18th 2026.
