With a name like Horizon: An American Saga, one can only assume that this is going to be an epic story or another vain passion project that Kevin Costner has thrown his entire heart and soul into...
The trailer opens with shots straight out of the John Ford playbook. Which I get because if you are going to be making a Western then maybe you should pay tribute to the man that brought us Westerns, such as Stagecoach, The Searchers, and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. But this is 2024, and if this is supposed to be the return of Westerns, I’m yearning to see something new.

My next grievance is we have Costner, the Writer, Director, Producer and Star playing a cowboy and getting it on with a much younger women. This never used to annoy me, but as I’ve seen Hollywood embracing women who are considered “older” I’ve come to appreciate how weird it is that we regularly see men with women that are 30 years younger than them. It just seems that Costner is using this movie to live his fantasy, buts it’s a fantasy that we have already seen before, and I want something new. (I, too, am a narcissistic prick and would probably do the same)

Then in what may be my most grievous strike against this movie is that it may just be pushing the sane old Indians vs. Cowboys tropes that we have repeatedly seen over and over again. In this modern era, the vast majority of us know that this depiction of Indigenous people’s is just wrong.
All that aside the film looks gorgeous and this is only the first trailer, so maybe, just maybe there is more to this than meets the eye.
