SDCC 2023 Recap: Project K/Kalki 2898-A.D

This year Project K became the first Indian film to debut at San Diego Comic Con. With a party, panel and special performance it certainly made its mark.

Kicking off things on Wednesday night, Project K hosted a party, in conjunction with Den of Geek, at the beautiful Horton Grand Hotel courtyard.

Comic Con parties are not really known for the great food but Project K sought to rectify this with guests being treated to a delicious selection of Indian appetisers.

They even provided dessert in the form of mango mousse tartlettes. These were a real standout with lots of attendees enjoying seconds.

Party goers also made use of the open bar with special themed cocktails being served.

Select cast and creatives were in attendance including Kamal Haasan, pictured below.

The next day, Project K arrived at Hall H for a panel. Rivalling a Marvel entrance, the audience was treated to a fantastic and energetic musical number. A group of drummers played on the stage while women with candles made their way through the aisles and performed a dance. This cemented its status as the most talked about panel of 2023.

Director Nag Ashwin then joined stars Kamal Haasan and Prabhas to discuss the film. A mix of sci-fi and Indian mythology, the film has an epic feel to it. While the trailer shown didn’t give too much away, the films seems like it will be a visual masterpiece with lots of action to keep audiences on the edge of their seats. Comparisons to films like Dune have already been made. Formerly known as Project K, the panel also unveiled the new name for the movie – Kalki 2898 AD.

Project K/Kalki 2898 AD certainly made a splash at this year’s SDCC. It introduced attendees to a movie that may not have immediately been on their radar and amped up a lot of excitement for its debut. Here’s hoping this will usher a new era of Comic Con where films from all over the world will take centre stage and attendees can find new content that they would not have otherwise known about.

Kalki 2898 AD is set to be released at cinemas in January 2024.
