It has long been rumoured but now its been officially confirmed that Space Jam 2 is happening with Lebron James in the lead and it would be directed by Justin Lin. I’m not sure what to make of this news, on one hand I’m excited that they are finally making a follow up to Space Jam which was one of my childhood favourite films. On another hand its been 20 years since the first one was released back in 1996 and I fear that too many years have past for a sequel to be relevant anymore. I also worry that Space Jam 2 would be a widely panned and a box office bomb because if that happens then it would tarnish the original.
While I thought director Justin Lin did a great job with the first Fast & Furious, Fast Five and Fast and Furious 6, he also created Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift which was considered the worst film out of the franchise. While J.J. Abrams did a great job of introducing a new audience to the world of Star Trek and Star Wars, I’m worried about the direction Justin Lin is taking Star Trek from the trailers I’ve seen so far for Star Trek Beyond. Justin Lin is a great director when it comes to action films but I don’t think his strength lies in storytelling. I’m really hoping Justin Lin can do justice with Space Jam 2 and not create a dud, here’s hoping that Michael Jordan and Bill Murray will make cameo appearances in the second film as a nod to the original.
