Ahead of Season 5 of Ghosts, a selection of the cast and creatives gathered in San Diego to discuss season 4 and give us an insight into what we can expect from the upcoming season. Moderated by Punam Patel , the panel featured Joe Wiseman, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Devan Chandler Long, Danielle Pinnock, and Asher Grodman.
The group started off by sharing their gratitude to the fans and discussing their fifth AND sixth season pick up, with Pinnock sharing “Job security is everything, we are thrilled, we wouldn’t have gotten the two season pick up without you all”. Wiseman echoed these statements stating that he believed that Ghosts has the best fans in television. He also discussed what the two season renewal meant for the creative process – “A two season pick up frees up the big picture stuff, it allows us to be more patient and take time, it’s a blessing and I’ve never been in this position before”.
Wisemen then dropped several exciting tidbits for the upcoming season. He confirmed that there would be another Halloween episode and that the Mummy we met last year would play a big part. We will also learn more about Flower’s power. And several reoccurring characters will be returning including Patience, Elias, Bela and Trevor’s daughter. Patience and Elias will have a showdown, Bela will have an interesting relationship with a ghost that’s not Trevor and we will see her more entrepreneurial side, and Trevor’s daughter will be working at the restaurant.
Grodman is particular excited for Trevor’s daughter to return as he had wanted to see more of her in the upcoming season as it would be massive growth for his character. Ambudkar is also thrilled to have Bela return, and hopefully more of his family, as he gets to actually act with her as opposed to the ghosts who he can’t see. He also expressed his wish for more action dream scenes with Sasappis.
Pinnock expressed her excitement at seeing the love story between her and Pete play out in the upcoming season, comparing them to a couple on Love Island – “I can’t wait to see her as a girlfriend because she’s going to be a mess, she’s going to be so toxic”. She’s also hoping for some more singing and music themed episodes. She had such a great time doing the musical episode, for which both her and Rose McIver had to do both tap and voice lessons, because it was nostalgic for her as a self professed theatre geek. On the panel, she took the time to pitch Wiseman about Alberta singing Radiohead which the audience heartily cheered for.
As for Thor, Long didn’t give too much away about what we could expect for his character in the upcoming season. When discussing his therapy storyline and if we would see more of that, Long in character stated “Thor done two sessions of therapy in two years. Thor done the work”.
Another mystery that is waiting to be solved is the cliffhanger reveal that Jay sold his soul. While the panel didn’t reveal any details, Ambudkar is excited – “I love when we all work together as a family against a common enemy so the soul storyline is a great opportunity for that”.
It’s clear that the show and the characters mean a lot to the actors on stage. Pinnock shared that “Alberta has been the greatest gift of my career. She’s a hot mess with a heart of gold. And as a plus size black woman in the 20s, I feel like I’m honouring my ancestors”. Grodman also spoke about how fun and unique Trevor is – “He’s still so connected to the living world. Out of all the ghosts he’s the least interested in being sucked off, so he’s an agent of chaos”. Long highlighted the similarities between himself and Thor – “I knew Thor before he was on the page, I’ve been living with him for a long time”. The others agreed with this, revealing that before he was cast, executive producer Joe Port was told by a friend that he knew a real life Viking who turned out to be Long. While Wiseman clearly loves the characters he created, he’s even more proud of the group of actors he assembled for the show calling them the best cast in television – “Watching this cast work together has been my favourite thing of the last 4 seasons”, something which we, and the fans at Comic Con certainly agreed with.
Ghosts season 5 will premiere later this year on October 16th on CBS.
