Baby Assassins 2 Babies : Review

Baby Assassin’s was a film that instantly clicked with me. It was weird in the best way possible, endeering, and had some fun action. Baby Assassins: 2 Babies takes this up a notch and crafts an incredibly unique movie that surpasses the original in every way possible. Not only does it tell the story of two badass assassin’s, but it manages to make it somehow relatable.

So how can a film about assassins be relatable?

Well, Baby Assassin’s follows the misadventures of Chitsato & Mahiro. Two young women who manage to be adorable through being absolutely useless at everything, everything except for violence. Just like the rest of us, they have bills to pay, and like the rest of us, sometimes they forget to pay those bills. Baby Assassins: 2 Babies sees our delightful protagonists being four years behind on their gym and insurance payments. Through a comedy of errors, while trying to fix this problem, they end up being suspended from their beloved Assassin’s guild. Leaving then unemployed and unknowingly hunted by a rival assassin team.

Akari Takaishi & Saori Izawa both reprise the lead roles of Chisato & Mahiro, respectively. And I would not want anyone else playing these roles. They are the glue that holds this movie together. They do this by being able to go from friendly to formidable in an instant. It really is an impressive trick.

And in case I overlook this one, I loved the little cameo from the hugely talented Atarashii Gakko! that pops up right in the middle of the movie and is never explained.

Remember how I said this film surpasses the original in every way? Well, that definitely includes the action. Writer and Director Yugo Sakamoto knows how to direct an action scene. From an incredibly entertaining fight in an office to the climactic show down, Yugo Sakamoto knows how to keep things from getting monotonous and keep the action energised.

I just love this movie. There really isn’t anything out there like it. If I were to describe it to you, it would be like a slice of life story, and John Wick had a perfectly balanced baby. Baby Assassins 2 Babies would be the outcome. And it works. Without a shadow of a doubt, this just works. So if you want a unique take on the hit man genera, I’d suggest Baby Assassin’s 2 Babies. It’s a tight 100-minute long film with loads of charm and plenty of combat. What more could you want?
