Transformers Age of Extinction (2014) Review

transformers-age-of-extinction-title-1280

I’ll admit I felt exactly like I did when they first announced they where to reboot the Spiderman film series. Was a Transformers reboot and so soon after the current trilogy, necessary at all? Was it a good idea? Would it work?

Before we begin to answer those questions, let’s think back to the original Spiderman Trilogy. I’ll admit that I thought Tobey Maguire was the perfect choice for Spiderman. He was able to pull of both being Spiderman and a nerd perfectly. He had that vulnerability about him that helped the audience connect with his character, unfortunately that connection isn’t there with Andrew Garfield. I just don’t think he was the right choice for Spiderman.

When Spiderman 4 never happened and the whole idea was scrapped in favour of a complete reboot, I like many other fans where left completely disappointed. The first two of the Amazing Spiderman series proved that maybe it was too soon to do a reboot. The first one had potential but they crammed too much into the second one that it fell apart. Only time can tell if they can redeem themselves with the third and fourth films.

Now back to Transformers. It was obvious that as soon as the third Transformers grossed over a billion dollars worldwide, that a fourth one would follow soon after. Since Shia Labeouf wasn’t interested in being involved in another one, I wondered how they where going to continue the story.

Transformers-Age-of-Extinction-Mark-Wahlberg

When Michael Bay was confirmed to Direct the next one and Mark Wahlberg was going to be in it, I wondered what role he could possibly play? I think Mark influenced my decision to see the new Transformers film. He is a versatile actor and has appeared in a variety of films from Boogie Nights to Pain and Gain. But let’s not forget that before he was the Actor that we all know him today he was a Model and a Rapper. Yes, you cannot see Mark Wahlberg the same way once you have seen his music videos from back in the day when he was known as Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. I thought if Mark Wahlberg is in it then it could make for an interesting reboot or sequel to Transformers.

Before I even made my way to Dublin for the Irish Premiere of Transformers Age of Extinction, I had already heard mixed reviews coming in from America. I reserved judgment and decided to give this film a chance. I went to the 3D screening of the film without much expectation and surprisingly I enjoyed the film. It’s not a Oscar winning film and it doesn’t take itself too seriously but that’s the whole point. If you come into the film expecting amazing script writing and compelling drama then you aren’t in the right frame of mind to enjoy the film. You just have to let go, sit back and just enjoy the awesomeness of watching a crazy robot fight. There is some laughs in the film, thanks to Mark Wahlberg and if you didn’t know already Mark has a comedic side to him. He is not scared to make fun of himself or take himself too seriously. I highly recommend Pain and Gain, a surprisingly good comedy drama from non other than Michael Bay. Pain and Gain proved that Bay and Wahlberg could collaborate to make something great. It was this film that heavily influenced me to go see Transformers Age of Extinction.

The basic premise of Transformers Age of Extinction is already revealed in the trailer. Sometimes trailers reveal too much and then there isn’t much else to say in the film itself. It was probably unavoidable so they could explain the story to a new audience and to prove to their existing fan base that they still had more to tell. All in all I would say that it’s worth watching, just don’t expect too much.

  1. Had it been shorter, I probably would have had more of a fun time. But sadly, it was almost three hours and I felt drained by the end of it all. Good review.
