In very disappointing and sad news, Sarah Michelle Gellar announced that the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot will not go ahead.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series ran for 7 seasons from 1997-2003, gaining a legion of fans and garnering critical acclaim. It was seen as revolutionary for turning the blonde cheerleader type who was usually a victim in horror into a kickass hero that always saved the day. The show is credited with inspiring many women (and men) with its powerful message and strong social commentary. So fans were extremely excited when Gellar, who played the titular character, announced last year that Buffy would be returning to Hulu to inspire a whole new generation in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale. With Oscar winning director Chloe Zao on board and Ryan Kiera Armstrong cast in the lead role, everything seemed to be in place.
However on Saturday, Gellar confirmed that Hulu had axed the show. In an Instagram video, she said “I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me. Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy New Sunnydale. I want to thank Chloe Zhao because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish, yet affordable boots, and thanks to Chloe, I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means not only to me, but to all of you. And this doesn’t change any of that.”
It is unclear at present why Hulu decided to not proceed but fans are already calling for other platforms like Netflix to pick up the show. While this would be complicated (and expensive) as Disney owns the rights, it’s not impossible. While Gellar hasn’t commented on any chatter about the show being picked up elsewhere, fans were hopeful about her still wanting to play Buffy again when she signed off the announcement with the infamous Buffy quote “I promise, if the apocalypse actually comes, you could still beep me.”
So come on Netflix, what are you waiting for? Beep her.
