Ahead of Rings of Power season 2 airing on Amazon, we caught up with the cast at San Diego Comic Con to talk all things Tolkien, their own nerdy habits and see what they could reveal about the upcoming season.
Leading the pack, Morfydd Clark (Galadriel) revealed how she prepares for her iconic role. She told us that she really made the most of the books and the rich history, and in that she enjoyed discovering in her research how “messy” the elves were – “They were throwing each other off buildings and just being really dramatic”. She also found playing an elf to be very liberating and pointed to their differing social norms – “I love the weirdness of the elves”.
As well as reading Tolkien, Clark enjoys other fantasy books in her free time. An avid Robin Hobb fan, she is making her way through her bibliography, although she is reluctant to finish them as she worries “something big and bad will happen”.
Something big and bad happened at the end of season 1 of Rings of Power with Galadriel’s confidant Halbrand being revealed as Sauron. Clark spoke with us about the fallout from that and how that would impact Galadriel going forward. She revealed that this season Galadriel has to decide who she’s going to be and that fans will see her go through that on a “grand elf scale”. She’s going to have some trust issues and have to rebuild herself after Halbrand’s betrayal. “It’s good to learn things about yourself but it’s also painful”. Finally, she teased that it would be dangerous out there in Middle Earth for season 2.
