Spider-Man: Aross the Spider-Verse – Review

I do not know where to start other than by saying that is was a webslinging ride…

Now you will all know that I am a huge fan of the original and by this point will probably know that the vast majoirty of reviews for this movie have been positivley glowing. So perhaps you will think that I am going to just agree with them and this is just another dumb superhero movie. Well sorry to dissapoint, but yes I am going to agree with them and no this is not just another dumb superhero movie, this one is so much more.

First off this film is not just Miles story, it does continue his saga, but the film quickly deviates and begins to parrallel with Gwens story. We quickly see two lost lonely souls who are spiralling at a terifying rate.  Two people who find it easier to wear a mask than be themselves. And this is not the only quick thing happening, the plot moves at a break neck speed, kicking off with a fun action sequence that lets us meet some of out new players. By the way, dear readers, ten years ago if you told me that I was going to be cheering on a pregnant, black, badass, motorcycle riding Spider-Women I would have been very confused, but this is 2023 and I need more.

Back to plot, the film seems to almost move in eight phases jumping between fast paced and chilled, right up until we reach a very tense finale, one that had me on the edge of me seat. I have been a spider-Man fan for the majority of my nearly 37 years on this planet and at no point did I want this film to end, even when it slowed down. This one just does noit dissapoint – believe me it is killing me not to go into spoiler territory, but here we are…

The returning cast are all fantastic, but I really want to do a big shout out too Hailee Steinfeld, as much as I loved her performance in the first film, here she brings a level of vuneralbility that a lot of actors struggle to do in voice roles. In a minor spoiler I will also do a shout out to Andy Samberg who played Ben Reilly / Scarlet Spider. The first Spider-Man book I ever purchased starred this character so I have always been a fan and Andy’s comedic play on him really made me smile, it was just so serious and so over the top, it was perfect for this 1990’s classic.

Even writing this I am also thinking how the hell can I write this and not mention Oscar issac’s intensity,  Greta Lee’s playfulness or Daniel Kaluuya pure punk energy as Spider-Pink. I think this will be a film where everyone will have their favourite Spider-Person and there will be no wrong answer.

As with its predescor the animation is spectacular, especially in the final act of the movie. But every world has its own flavour and style and that is what makes this movie so great to watch. Not only that but again the Spider-Verse has given us an amazing soundtrack, I really could talk about this movie for hours, but you are best just seeing it. It may not be flawless, but is is dam close to perfect and it will definetly entertain you, proving that there is still plenty of life in superhero movies.
