I Get Knocked Down Was The Film I Needed

If you have been following me you will know that I have not only been questioning what the hell I’m doing with my life, but also battling cancer. As of writing this I am still waiting on my final results, I’m hopeful but there is always going to be that little voice that nags at me. And in those rare times that I give into the voice I can become very hopeless and go down a rabbit hole or freaking out about politics, money and the future.

So why am I telling you all this?

Well “I get knocked down” was the film that I needed. Not only did it cover topics of hope, politics, art, parental relationships and middle age but it is also named after one of the songs on my cancer playlist.

So what is the film about?

It’s a documentary about Dunstan Bruce. Who in another life was the lead singer of Chumbawumba. The entire world will remember them from their huge hit single Tubthumping, but what most of the world missed was that the band had a history before this. A history of punk and true anarchy.

I could go into a lot of detail about the history of Chumbawumba, but honestly you are better off just watching the movie. Just know these guys were the real deal, from living in a squat in Leeds to donating most of their earnings to causes they believed in.

The politics was something that creeped into this movie, but any story about punk will inevitably be about politics. It’s a rabbit hole that I could spend hours going down but in their politics Chumbawumba once again proved they are the real deal. And in my personal opinion in the age of social media the band would have been a much bigger success. After all everyone loves a fighter.

In the end this film filled me with hope and reminded me why I do the things I do. I make my videos and write my pieces because it’s what I need to do, for myself not for anyone else.

This film really is worth a watch.
