The Most Highly Anticipated Comedy Films Of 2015

We’re well into 2015 and if you’re anything like me you’ll be wondering what the world of film has to offer us. Last year we had some truly great movies: Guardians of the Galaxy, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies. The list goes on and on. 2014 is a tough act to follow. However after watching a lot of trailers I’m confident that we film buffs won’t be disappointed. So here at Nerdgeist we thought we’d compile a list of the movies we’re most excited to see by genre. Kicking things off are the comedies.

The Duff

After being labelled a DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) by her fellow classmates, a high school senior sets out to reinvent herself and revolutionize the school’s social order. The incredibly talented and underrated Mae Whitman leads a stellar comedic cast including Ken Jeong and Robbie Amell in a film that had me laughing throughout the trailer.

Release date: 20th February (USA), 10th April (UK)

Unfinished Business

A small business owner and his two associates travel to Europe to close a deal that could save their struggling company. Things don’t go exactly to plan and mayhem ensures. Whilst this type of film has been done a dozen times before, it’s a formula that seems to work if you’ve got the right cast. With Vince Vaughn leading the pack, and the likes of Dave Franco and Nick Frost supporting, it seems as if it could be the new Hangover.

Release date: 6th March (USA and UK)

Home Sweet Hell

When Mona learns of her husband’s affair with a co-worker, she realises that the only way to maintain their perfect storybook life is to kill her. Mayhem obviously follows. The trailer for this film is absolutely hilarious and Katherine Heigl is great as the psycho wife. Sure the premise is ridiculous but it totally works.

Release date:  13th March (USA)

Get Hard

A man convicted of tax evasion asks his black friend, Darnell, to help him prepare for life behind bars. Little does he know that Darnell has never spent any time in prison. With Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell leading this movie, it has the potential to be the funniest film of the year. Its success will probably lie in the chemistry between the two men, which seems to be plentiful in the trailer.

Release date: 27th March (USA and UK). The World Premiere for Get Hard will be at SXSW 2015. Check out the official site for more information and tickets to SXSW.

Pitch Perfect 2

College a cappella group the Barden Bellas are back and this time they’re entering an international competition which no American team has ever won. Pitch Perfect was that ultimate guilty pleasure flick that had everybody laughing…and singing along. Let’s hope that the sequel does the same.

Release date: 15th May (USA and UK)

Spy

A deskbound CIA analyst offers to go undercover and infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer when her fellow agents’ identities are compromised. I’ll admit I’m a fan of pretty much anything Melissa McCarthy does and judging by the trailer this looks like it will be no exception.

Release date: 22nd May (USA), 5th June (UK). Spy will Premiere in March 2015 at SXSW 2015. Check out the official site for more information and tickets to SXSW.

Ted 2

In the sequel Ted must prove that he is a person in a court of law so that he and his wife can have a baby. The first film was the highest grossing original R-rated comedy of all time so Ted 2 has a lot to live up to. Sequels are always difficult to get right but judging by the trailer, it looks as if it may just pull it off.

Release date: 26th June (USA), 10th July (UK)

Absolutely Anything

Simon Pegg stars in this film about a schoolteacher that is given the power to make anything possible by a group of eccentric aliens. Although an official trailer has yet to be released, this brief clip gives us a taste of what we can expect. As funny as the film looks, there is an air of sadness as it is the final film of the late Robin Williams.

Release date: July (UK)

The 2015 SXSW Film Festival will run from March 13 to March 21 in Austin, Texas.
